Education is a pathway out of poverty but for children living around Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya just getting to school is a huge hurdle. The nearest school is often a tiring walk for up to 8km walk and pupils face encounters with wildlife and other threats. In response, in 2024 Ol Pejeta approved the purchase of a parcel of land next to the conservancy to build a new secondary school called Uaso Nyiro to expand life opportunities for children in the surrounding communities.
For children living around Ol Pejeta Conservancy, there is only one secondary school serving a population of 56,000. Pupils face either high costs for transport or schools, or a long, arduous and sometimes dangerous walk to schools. With above average poverty levels, this means that many drop out of the education system after primary school. This leaves rural youth with fewer life chances and worse career prospects.
Building the Uaso Nyiro School will directly increase the availability of secondary education for pupils from communities around Ol Pejeta Conservancy. This will significantly reduce the distance they must travel. A safe and accessible school environment will encourage enrolment and retention, especially for girls most affected by the long, unsafe journeys to school. Finally, a school equipped with science and sports facilities will ensure pupils receive a high quality and holistic education.
Uaso Nyiro Secondary school is an investment to the future of the communities living near Ol Pejeta. Once the school reaches full enrolment, it will provide spaces for 800 pupils. An educated generation will be better positioned to take advantage of employment opportunities and innovate in agricultural livelihoods. By equipping young people with knowledge and skills, the school will produce active citizens who can drive sustainable development and strengthen conservation efforts around Ol Pejeta
