At Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean (Ipas LAC), we work to ensure that women and all people with reproductive capacity have the correct information, feel supported in their decisions, and have the confidence to access safe abortion and contraceptive services when they need them.
Our technical innovation team specializes in creating tools that break barriers to abortion access—combining technology, communication, and advocacy to ensure accurate information reaches those who need it most.
As part of this strategy, we launched the “Abortion Questions with Sofía” chatbot—an automated, confidential tool that answers to the most frequently asked questions about self-managed abortion with misoprostol.
Created through a people-centered design process, Sofía reflects the voices and needs of thousands of women across Latin America. Its structured flow covers five main themes and 56 question options, based on over 3,000 real inquiries received through our digital platforms.
Initially piloted in Mexico, Sofía has now been adapted for other countries in the region, with content tailored to to cultural, linguistic, and legal contexts—so that wherever women are, they can find safe, trustworthy guidance.
This tool has become a trusted source of information that offers accessible, immediate, and confidential guidance on self-managed abortion. Since its launch in 2022 and up to July 2025, Sofía has facilitated over 50,000 conversations—most of them centered on questions about using misoprostol for a safe abortion.
With your support, we can continue to expand Sofía’s reach, integrate new formats for people with low literacy or limited internet access, and add technological features that make information even more accessible, clear, and secure.
We believe that collective efforts are essential to advancing reproductive justice. Your contribution helps ensure that no one is left without accurate, life-saving information about their reproductive health.
