Giving a River Back its Song : Kadappoor Community Bird Sanctuary

Project by: Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES)

Location: Kadappoor, Kottayam, Kerala, India

For years, the Kattachira rivulet, a vital artery of the great Meenachil River in Kerala, was fading. Choked with waste and neglect, its flow slowed to a trickle, and its banks fell silent. The vibrant emerald paddy fields it once nourished lay barren, and the birdsong that once filled the air became a distant memory. This wasn't just an ecological loss; it was the loss of a lifeline for the communities of Kadappoor.

But where there is community, there is hope.

A powerful movement began to swell from the grassroots. The Meenachil-Meenanthara-Kodoor River Peoples Collective, a formidable force of local citizens, joined hands with us at TIES, the dedicated Kattachira Rivulet Protection Society, and the passionate local birders of Wings Society. Together, we refused to let our river die.

Through sheer determination, community effort, and your past support, we achieved what many thought was impossible. We have successfully restored an incredible 50 kilometers of rivulets and river tributaries! The water flows freely once again. And with the water, life has returned. Today, over 300 acres of paddy fields are flourishing, providing food and livelihood, their green shoots a testament to a promise fulfilled. The river is breathing again. Now, about 62 species of resident birds and 14 species of migrant birds are enjoying the locality.

Our Work is Not Over: A Sanctuary Awaits

Our success has unveiled a new, critical mission. Nestled within this revived watershed lie two magnificent wetlands—sprawling, biodiverse, and pulsating with life. These wetlands are the heart of the ecosystem, a crucial refuge for resident and migratory birds, a nursery for fish, and the natural kidneys that keep our restored river clean. They are a jewel of biodiversity we cannot afford to lose.

If left unprotected, these havens are vulnerable to encroachment and pollution, which would undo all our hard-won progress. The return of the river is not complete until its entire ecosystem is secure.

Our Solution: The Kadappoor Bird Study Centre

To safeguard this natural treasure, we are launching our most ambitious project yet: the Kadappoor Community Bird Sanctuary and Study Centre. This will be more than just a protected area. It will be a community-owned and managed hub for conservation, education, and sustainable eco-tourism.

Imagine a place where local children learn to identify the iridescent flash of a kingfisher, where farmers become citizen scientists monitoring water quality, and where the wisdom of the community guides our conservation efforts. The Centre will serve as a watchtower against threats, a living laboratory for researchers, and a source of pride and sustainable income for the local people who have fought so hard for their river.

Join Us in Giving the River its Voice

We have brought the water back. Now, we need your help to ensure the birdsong that follows is never silenced again. Your contribution will go directly towards establishing this vital sanctuary.

  • You will help us conduct biodiversity assessments and create a conservation management plan.
  • You will support the construction of a simple, eco-friendly observation centre, interpretation centre, and walking trails.
  • You will fund educational workshops for local schools and community groups, turning residents into empowered guardians of their natural heritage.
  • You will empower the Wings Society and Kattachira Rivulet Protection Society with the tools they need for long-term monitoring and protection.

The people of Kadappoor have shown their unwavering commitment. They have poured their hearts into reviving their river. By supporting the Kadappoor Bird Study Centre, you are not just adopting a river; you are investing in a community’s enduring promise to protect it for generations to come.

Join us. Help us give this river its song back, forever.
