The Meenachil River was once the lifeblood of Kottayam, Kerala—a serene waterway that sustained thousands of lives. But since the devastating Great Flood of 2018, the river has been gasping for breath. Its very anatomy has changed.
A River Interrupted
The 2018 floods didn't just pass through; they rearranged the landscape. Massive deposits of clay, silt, and waste have created "artificial islands" within the river’s distributaries. At Cheepunkal alone, a staggering 100,000 square meters of earth now blocks the water's natural path to the Vembanad Lake.
Where water once flowed freely, land-like structures topped with thick vegetation now stand as barricades.
The Human Cost of "New Land"
These islands might look green, but they are silent disasters for the people of Aymanam, Arpookkara, Thiruvarpu, and Kumarakom. Because the river cannot reach the lake, even a single day of heavy rain now triggers localized flooding.
Our Solution: A Sustainable Circle
The Tropical Institute of Environmental Sciences (TIES), alongside the Meenachil-Meenanthara-Koduur River Rejoining People’s Fraternity, has a plan that turns a problem into a resource.
Our goal is to remove these "blocks" and use the excavated earth to strengthen the aging bunds (embankments) of the local paddy fields. This creates a double impact:
The Government is Acting, But We Need You
While the government has initiated a massive INR 103 Crore project for Pazhukkanila Kkayal, the scale of the crisis requires urgent, community-led intervention in the smaller tributaries. We cannot wait for the next monsoon to displace 6,000 more people.
"By removing just one island in a key tributary, we can change the fate of an entire ecosystem."
How Your Contribution Heals
Your support goes directly toward the machinery and manpower needed to desilt these blocks and restore the Meenachil’s dignity.
Your impact at a glance:
Join us in freeing the Meenachil. Let’s ensure that when the rains come, they bring life—not fear.
