On August 31, 2025, a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan and caused serious damage in Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces. Many families lost their loved ones, their homes were destroyed, and thousands of people were left without food, clean water, shelter, or access to education.
After the earthquake, Teach For Afghanistan quickly mobilized its network of fellows, teachers, and alumni to understand the situation and support affected communities. Our teams visited several villages in Kunar Province, especially in Norgal District, including Mazar Dara, Masood Village, and Shomash Village. During these visits, our team met with families and community leaders to learn about their most urgent needs, especially the needs of children.
In Nangarhar Province, our team also visited Kuz Kunar and Dare Noor districts, including Budyali Village. We held meetings with school leaders and community members to discuss how we can support students during this difficult time. Many children are still experiencing fear and stress after the earthquake, so we are also focusing on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to help them feel safe and supported again.
We are grateful to share that the project has received its first donation of $100. With this support, our team was able to provide food packages to four earthquake-affected families identified during our field visits. For these families, this support helped them meet their immediate food needs during a very difficult time.
Although this is a small beginning, it shows that people around the world care about the families affected by this disaster. Every contribution gives hope and support to communities that are trying to recover and rebuild their lives.
At the same time, we are preparing to provide learning materials and emergency education support for children affected by the earthquake. Many students lost access to books, school materials, and safe learning spaces. One of our partner schools, Budyali Girls High School in Kuz Kunar District, where our fellows are teaching, was also affected by the earthquake.
Our fellows and volunteers continue to work closely with schools and communities to identify the families and children who need the most support. In the coming months, we hope to provide learning materials, small education kits, and psychosocial support activities so children can return to learning and regain a sense of normal life.
We are very thankful to the donors who have supported this project so far. Your generosity is helping families recover and giving hope to children in affected communities.
With continued support, we hope to reach more families and ensure that children affected by the earthquake can continue their education and rebuild their future.
Thank you for standing with the people of Afghanistan during this challenging time.
