Afghan Women and Girl's Survival Fund

In September 2025, a series of devastating earthquakes struck Afghanistan’s south-eastern region, killing and wounding thousands. Many of those impacted –– particularly women and girls –– are facing displacement, extreme food insecurity, and lack of shelter. Despite this, humanitarian access remains limited and resources are scarce. 

In response, MADRE activated our Feminist Emergency Disaster & Response Fund to meet urgent needs and resource our partners as first responders. Together, we are distributing the following to over 1,400 affected individuals:

• Cash assistance to families in remote destroyed areas;
• Essential food packages and baby formulas;
• Dignity kits containing clothing, hygiene supplies, and menstrual health products;
• Emergency shelter materials, including blankets and cooking utensils; and
• Psychosocial support to address trauma, reduce stress, and strengthen resilience. 

Additionally, MADRE and our partners are organizing temporary learning spaces for girls whose clandestine schools were damaged by the earthquake, ensuring they can continue their education even in crisis.

In Afghanistan, women and girls are barred from enjoying their most fundamental human rights. The Taliban’s many edicts deprive women and girls of rights to secondary and higher education, free expression, and most employment. With your generous support, MADRE continues to provide education, employment, psychosocial support, humanitarian aid, and livelihood and relocation costs for Afghan women and girls as they resist one of the world’s most restrictive regimes. 

For young Afghan girls who are denied education by the Taliban, the schools and centers run by MADRE’s local partners are the difference between being held prisoner in your own home and having a youth surrounded by peers with whom to share joy and connection. The schools and centers run by MADRE’s partners clandestinely provide nearly 600 women and girls with safe spaces to learn, in bold defiance of the Taliban’s current ban on girls' education. In these spaces, women and girls can connect with each other, receive support to improve their mental and physical health, and access math, science, reading, writing, literature, computer skills, and sewing courses. In the areas where they operate, these programs are the only form of education available to women and girls.
