Afghanistan Emergency Fund

Thank you for your generous donations to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. Your contributions are helping ensure that Afghans have access to nutritious food, education,  mental health programming, and direct disaster relief following another onslaught of floods.   

As you may have seen in the news another series of floods in July displaced thousands and killed more than 58 people. These incidents exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, which has worsened since the Taliban regained power three years ago. Millions of women and girls have lost their rights, education, and freedom of movement. Recently, the Taliban imposed a law mandating that women completely conceal their bodies, faces, and voices outside their homes. Every day, our partners are working tirelessly to advocate for their communities and address their needs.

That is why your donation means the world to us and our partners. Most recently, your support powered three grants to the following nonprofits: 

• Teach for Afghanistan (TfA) works diligently to repair schools, provide materials, and offer psychological support to students at 18 learning centers, helping over 20,000 children affected by the spring and summer floods. With far fewer resources often dedicated to Afghanistan’s rural areas, TfA’s efforts are imperative to the flood-prone countryside in ensuring no one is left behind amid a country-wide crisis. 

• LEARN Afghan offers free online classes in subjects like math, science, and coding, along with offline resources. Despite having to move one of their in-person schools online due to recent Taliban edicts, they remain committed to expanding their underground schools and providing essential aid during crises, ensuring girls continue to access education. As of this fall, LEARN is running 6 underground schools in more than 5 provinces. Learn more about their work with this exclusive interview with LEARN founder and activist Pashtana Durrani.

• Mobile Mini Circus for Children (MMCC) provides critical psychosocial support, hygiene programs and food security for Afghan children. MMCC provides daily nutritious lunches to 100 children in Herat, runs 34 Social Circus teams benefiting more than 2,000 children, and offers educational performances to thousands of people in Nangarhar. As the Taliban’s increasingly restrictive rules impact the mental and physical health of many Afghans, sustaining these vital programs amid rising costs is essential.

Thank you for your generous donations to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. Your contributions are helping ensure that Afghans have access to healthy food, healthcare, education, and relief following a deadly string of natural disasters and ongoing violence.   

More than  23 million Afghans rely on humanitarian assistance in 2024, with new families being added to the list each day as disasters like the deadly floods in Kabul in April and May that killed more than 300 people and injured nearly 1,600 community members.

Generous support to the fund has recently powered seven grants to vetted nonprofit partners in our community. Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

• Sahar Education is an Afghan-led nonprofit that ensures all children can go to school,  particularly girls barred under Taliban rule. The organization offers coding classes for girls and empowerment courses for mothers. In 2024, they aim to assist over 400 girls through diverse initiatives and also seek to foster feminist allies among Afghan boys via courses promoting female empowerment and involvement in community decision-making. 

• Afghanistan-Pakistan Women's Economic Empowerment (APWEE) focuses on women's livelihoods, education, and emergency aid. APWEE continues to provide food packages to women and families affected by the 2023 earthquakes in Herat, an area experiencing severe food shortages due to drought, job loss, supply chain shortages, and aid blockages by the defacto government. APWEE also implements projects like livestock farming and sewing machine distribution to help women impacted by natural disasters. In the past, the nonprofit funded key business development workshops for female Afghan refugees in Pakistan facing deportation.

• Action for Development (AfD) is an Afghan-led organization providing essential care to communities at their health clinic. With more than 80% of the population now below the poverty line, fewer can afford the $1 fee that was used to pay salaries for staff and fund community outreach efforts. GlobalGiving’s support enables AfD to continue to run this clinic, which addresses critical gaps in care for Afghans as it serves 50-65 patients daily.

• LEARN Afghan is a nonprofit organization established in 2018 by an Afghan refugee determined to. LEARN provides free education for Grades one1 to 12 in Pashto and Dari, benefiting more than 7,000 Afghan girls. The organization offers classes and training in key subjects like math, science, and coding, along with offline learning through its at-home resources. The organization continues prioritizing expanding its underground schools and stepping up in times of crisis to deliver essential goods to people who need it most. , humanitarian aid distributions especially after disasters like the earthquakes in Herat in 2023, and its maternal health programs.

• Enabled Children Initiative (ECI) is one of the only nonprofits in Afghanistan dedicated exclusively to children with disabilities. Following Afghanistan's recent flash floods, ECI is aiding families with disabled children enrolled in its programs who reached out with pleas for support. Drawing on ECI’s successful response to the 2023 Herat earthquakes, ECI will provide families with much-needed emergency aid, like food, clothing, and other essential goods.
