A heartfelt thank you for your continued support! We are excited to celebrate our 12th anniversary at Cadogan Hall at end of this month. As we mark this milestone, we will be especially thinking those who are unable to join us in person and enjoy the achievement and progress our young musicians are proud and happy to showcase with our supporters.
We are continuously collecting data on our work to better understand the positive change your donation can support. We are proud to say we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of our young musicians on many levels. While we do not specifically collect data on students’ mental health or wellbeing, observational insights and responses to our twice-yearly questionnaire clearly demonstrate that our programme positively affects both our students and their families. This is especially significant in the light of growing mental health challenges among young people in the UK, highlighted by alarming PISA (2022) research showing that UK’s 15-year-olds report the lowest average life satisfaction in Europe.
It is well documented that music participation can positively influence on the mental health on both adults and young people. Recent research into learners’ attitudes (ABRSM: Making Music 2025) found that 84% of young people believe that music makes an important contribution to their mental health. At Nucleo, 96% of Nucleo’s young people say they feel proud to be a part of the programme. They tell us how happy they are when they play, that they love their instrument and how much fun they have at Nucleo.
Wellbeing is not just about individual or family progress – it is deeply connected to community, sustainability and a sense of predictability. In fact, 87% of students report feeling connected to others at Nucleo. Both students and their parents frequently express their gratitude for the opportunity to attend. It has also been found that supporting others, and receiving support from others, contributes to this feeling of relationship-building, meaning that the co-operative and supportive atmosphere that has been observed throughout the Nucleo programme is impacting students’ wellbeing as well as their music learning.
At a time when, according to The Children’s Society (2024), two in five parents and carers are struggling to afford activities outside school, your generosity ensures that cost is not a barrier to sustained musical engagement at Nucleo. With lessons available six days a week and students being group by their ability, we can provide activities that are challenging enough to be absorbing, but well-matched enough to different level of skills that it does not cause undue stress.
Your donations have helped create a space where children and young people can develop not only musical skills but also vital social, emotional and personal skills, making a lasting contribution to their mental health and overall wellbeing.
