Ashlly is 10 years old. At birth, she was diagnosed with myelomeningocele with spina bifida, a neural tube defect in which the bones of the spine do not fully form during gestation. This also causes Ashlly to develop hydrocephalus. At 15 days old, she underwent spinal surgery and a valve was implanted to help drain fluid from her spine. Today, Ashlly, suffers from bilateral genu valgum and equinus foot, requiring leg surgery distal femoral hemipiphyseal repair. Sheneeds a valve replacement too
Ashlly requires a valve replacement that helps drain fluid from her spinal cord, in addition to a correction in her legs through bilateral distal femoral hemipiphysiodesis, bilateral multiple tenotomy, pediatric figure-8 plate-screw system, and AFO-type splint.
Ashlly needs a valve replacement to relieve intracranial pressure and prevent permanent damage to her physical and mental functions. She has also fallen several times due to the condition of her feet. The goal is to provide Ashlly with a healthier and happier life.
Ashley has always been a unique child, and together we can make her life more normal, healthier, and happier. She is in no way to blame for having myelomeningocele or all that it entails. At 10 years old, she is only in the third grade because her development has been affected. However, all the specialists who have evaluated her affirm that leading a normal life has been the most beneficial thing for her, but she still needs support to continue making her life as close to normal as possible.
