Esmé’s temperament as a surrogate mom to 6 calves has amazed everyone. She takes everything in her stride and patiently guides them – even playing with them on the odd occasion.
As always, Esmé loves attention and will make sure that when the camera is pointed in her direction, she takes the spotlight. Besides regular mud baths, she loves getting a hose-down in the boma after a long day’s mothering. We of course know she deserves it.
On the horizon soon will be another de-horning procedure for Esmé, along with Thaba, Mango, Bula and Peter. Because rhino horns are made from keratin, just like our fingernails and toenails, they grow back and need to be trimmed down. While we would love to see our rhinos not having to undergo dehorning procedures, we feel better knowing that they have an added layer of protection once this has been done.
There are plans to move Thaba and Mango over to this GlobalGiving project along with Esmé because even though they are still classified as calves, they can begin their next steps in the rehabilitation process.
For now, our big girl enjoys her days out in the bush and continues to be a sturdy anchor for those under her care.
