Project Report | Aug 15, 2025
Pedals and Tales!

By Amna Hassan Kazmi | CEO

Period: May to July 2025
Prepared by: Alif Laila Book Bus Society

Overview

The Book Bike, Alif Laila’s mobile library, continued to bring stories, learning, and joy to underserved communities this quarter. Despite extreme heatwaves and flooding limiting operations in June and July, the days it was out on the road brought excitement, learning, and meaningful engagement to children.

Key Highlights

  • Total Visits This Quarter: 10 visits (including 4 in July)

  • Total Children Benefited (May–July): 160 children

  • Communities Visited: Canal Park – Street No. 32, Street No. 34, and nearby underserved neighborhoods in Lahore

July 2025 Visits

  • Total Boys: 41

  • Total Girls: 23

  • Grand Total: 64 children

Activities Conducted

  • Mobile library book lending and shaded reading circles

  • Interactive storytelling sessions led by facilitators

  • Drawing and short writing activities inspired by the books read

  • Refreshments provided to keep children comfortable and safe in high temperatures

Children’s Voices

“When the Book Bike comes, it feels like the stories are coming to visit me!” – Sara, age 8
“These books take me to places where there is no heat and no flood, only fun.” – Ayesha, age 9

Challenges

  • Extreme Weather: Heatwaves reduced safe outdoor reading time and shortened sessions.

  • Flooding: Some streets and communities became inaccessible, reducing the total number of visits possible in June and July.

Impact

Between May and July 2025, the Book Bike brought books and activities to 160 children in low-income neighborhoods of Lahore. Even with fewer operational days, each visit created a safe, joyful, and engaging space for reading and imagination. The program continued to strengthen literacy habits while bringing hope and excitement to children facing environmental and social challenges.

Looking Ahead

  • Resume a full operational schedule in August and September as weather conditions improve

  • Introduce themed reading weeks to boost participation and engagement

  • Expand volunteer involvement to ensure continued access in flood-affected areas

Wherever the Book Bike pedals, it leaves a trail of stories, smiles, and hope.
