Bahia Mar's Bonguile project sustains a Community Preschool, primarily through donations from guests. "Bonguile" means "gratitude" in the local language. The preschool serves aroudn 70 three to five year old children from the Quinto Congressa neighborhood annually. Trained community members use a "learn-through-play" teaching approach and serve porridge to the kids daily. Because of your generosity, all localchildren can attend, regardless of their economic situation.
The Mozambican government provides education starting in primary school at six years old. Most children stay home in their early year and are only exposed the local language. Sometimes they are not well supervised while their parents leave the house to earn income. Children lacking socialization, preliteracy and maths skills and exposure to the Portuguese language, have a rocky start in primary school. For some, the first year can be a shock they never fully recover from.
Bahia Mar established the Bonguile project in 2013 to ensure early childhood development opportunities for neighborhood children, regardless of their ability to pay small monthly fees. By sustaining the school, the project delivers "learn-through-play" lessons, porridge, socialization and physical development in the beautiful classrooms and playground to as many as 70 children per year. Just $60 per child per year, donated here or in cash, completes the school's operating budget for the year. :)
The Bonguile project provides children with the "early childhood development difference." This is the proven phenomenon - those who attended preschool achieve better later-in-life outcomes around educational attainment, income and health. Evidence can be found in UN studies (https://www.unicef.org/early-childhood-development). Because the Bonguile children also get rare early exposure to the national/educational language, they are getting a HUGE boost in life. AND YOU MAKE IT POSSIBLE!
