CHILDREN IN MINING AREAS SOW HOPE
Children in emerald mining areas in western Boyacá, in the central Andean region of Colombia, live in territories dominated by violence, machismo, and discrimination. The emerald trade has fostered the creation of business groups that do not hesitate to resort to weapons to settle their differences. Emerald fever, the desire for easy riches, dominates local populations and, so to speak, contaminates the mindset of young people and children.
Helping them build life projects that go beyond emerald mining is our main objective in the area. We have begun by strengthening the self-esteem of children and young people, guiding them to discover their many creative abilities. This discovery has been fundamental in beginning to sow hope in their minds, hope that it is possible to live beyond the mining frenzy.
