In 2025-2026, Breaking Walls Festival launches its landmark 8th edition, expanding across Egypt to bring bold, inclusive, gender-conscious contemporary dance directly to communities who need it most. For nearly a decade, Breaking Walls Festival has transformed public spaces, empowered emerging Egyptian artists, and built bridges between Egypt and the Mediterranean. Today, we need your help to make the next edition possible - accessible, equitable, and entirely free for audiences.
Breaking Walls is a site-specific contemporary dance festival founded in 2017 by NUT Dance Company. Built on the principles of exchange, experience, and opportunity, the festival brings international choreographers and Egyptian dancers together to create powerful performances that reclaim public space and spark societal dialogue. Across previous editions the festival has featured 100+ site-specific performances, 1,000-4,000 annual attendees, +100 job opportunities for Egyptian artists each year
What Makes this Edition Special? A Festival Centered on Gender, Care & Inclusion This year, we confront one of the most urgent issues across Egypt and the Mediterranean: gender inequality and gender-based violence (GBV). 8th edition includes: -8 international choreographers & 4 art managers from the Med. & Europe leading 10-day residencies -Open-source roundtable discussions on gender, access & equity in the performing arts -60+ Egyptian dancers receiving training mentorship & paid opportunities
This is not just a festival - it's a blueprint for a safer, more inclusive cultural landscape in Egypt. Breaking Walls Festival remains free for all audiences and continues to prioritize: - Fair pay for all artists - Accessibility for women and artists from outside Cairo - Safe, gender-conscious creative spaces - Bringing performances to underserved areas - Public dialogue on difficult but essential topics
