Al Ahli hospital update, Gaza

By Katie Hagley | Head of Community Engagement, Amos Trust

I am writing to you as a supporter of our breast screening program in Gaza to update you on the situation and to thank youf or your support.

In our January update I was able to let you know that with the fragile ceasefire ongoing at that time the hospital had been able to start to resume its cancer treatment with those patients who were part-way through treatment on October 7th 2023. They were also starting to be able to provide rehabilitation services for victims of the war through their specialist surgical, burns and physiotherapy departments and to provide diagnostic outpatient services. Furthermore, they were looking to start making repairs to all the damage done to the hospital after being hit on a number of occasions in the previous 15 months.

Sadly, on 13th April, the Israeli’s  launched an attack on the Al Ahli Hospital. They gave a 20-minute warning to take patients outside (including intensive care patients) before two missiles hit the hospital. This was another devastating blow to healthcare in Gaza, which has been systematically attacked by Israel during the conflict in clear breach of international law.

Initial estimates place the cost of repairing damage to the emergency department building, genetic department and pharmacy buildings as being over $3 million. There was also wide-scale further damage, which meant the hospital had to close, although it has now once again reopened.

Before Al Ahli was attacked there were 80-100 inpatients, and each day:

  • 250 trauma injury treatments
  • 23 surgeries (for often complex injuries)
  • 120 injury dressings (including acute injuries)
  • 50 CT scans (Al Ahli had the only functioning scanner in the northern half of Gaza)
  • 200 x-rays
  • 32 ultrasounds
  • 85 physiotherapy sessions

Despite extensive damage this time around Al Ahli has managed to re-open and  is now operating at about 40% of its capacity. The diagnostic centre and the children’s rehab department have reopened, and the chemo centre has partially reopened. Each day they are now seeing:

  • 50 inpatients
  • 4-5 operations for vascular and orthopaedic cases
  • 60 wound dressings
  • 20 CT scans

Shortly before the attack, we had sent through funds to assist them in reopening their physiotherapy unit, but fortunately the work was delayed due to problems sourcing materials. We will continue to work with the Diocese of Jerusalem to support the hospital and will send through supplies and other essential requirements as soon as possible.

Given the current situation. We feel that at this time it would make sense to put this GlobalGiving project on hold as the hospital just cannot do all the diagnostic work it would like. Any money we receive through this breast screening campaign will be held for this  work as and when it is able to run again. In the meantime, you might want to support  our emergency appeal for Gaza on GlobalGiving -  this appeal supports Al Ahli hospital alongside a number of other partners  in Gaza providing food, psychosocial care, medical aid and education.

Thank you for all your support and please contact katie@amostrust.org if you have any questions and if you would like to receive our e-news and hear about all our work in Palestine please sign up here.

Best Wishes,

Katie Hagley
