Women Light the World has selected 40 impoverished households in one of the most remote and underserved communities in Nepal to receive solar electricity. Three formerly trained local women will independently spearhead the project with your support to solar-electrify their villages. This will catalyze gender equality, climate justice and economic uplift within the community.
There are more than 97,000 households in Nepal that still lack access to electricity- often in the most remote, climate-vulnerable and underserved regions of the country. Due to their location, traditional grid electricity (fossil fuel-powered) is not feasible and may not be available for many decades. This results in evenings of total darkness for many, reducing living standards and making otherwise simple activities- such as cooking or studying at night- extremely difficult.
Women Light the World aims to promote equitable access to clean solar energy by empowering and supporting the entrepreneurship of marginalized Nepali women. We don't just provide solar power- with our International education partner, we offer vocational and educational training to local women, who then solar-electrify their own communities. This initiative, already a successful model in more than 93 countries of the Global South, empowers marginalized women and provides clean, renewable energy.
By supporting the entrepreneurial aspirations of women and placing them at the forefront of this groundbreaking program, gender equity is sustained within communities that often do not offer women job opportunities. This, in turn, inspires the next generation of Nepal to invest in women- one of the largest untapped resources and a key solution to resolving the climate crisis and boosting the global GDP. Women Light the World has already successfully implemented the electrification of 265 homes.
