For hundreds of children of landless farm worker families in Mindanao, Philippines stricken with cancer from toxic exposure, their battle for survival is strengthened by simple toys provided by Asia America Initiative [AAI]. The Children's Cancer Center at House of Hope in Davao City, provides cancer medication free of charge to children of all cultures and religions in a systematic manner. AAI, the One World Institute and other volunteer partners compliment medical treatment by giving these courageous children smiles, songs and laughter. A communal kitchen at the Center permits Mothers to cook traditional foods -- and separates pork from non-pork diets as required by Muslim faith. Importantly, the kitchens allow affordable meals for children undergoing treatment with proper nutrition to fully recover and to counter the side effects of strong chemo or radiation based medicines. Volunteer teachers and mentors use educational and fun story books provided by AAI to expand educational opportunities and the children's families' hope for the future. This is especially important for young children who need care and guidance.
In June, 2018, AAI expanded its toy program at the House of Hope. GlobalGiving donors assisted us with cash needed to ship toys and books and to purchase local mtaerials. "We hope to have a toy and book given to each child as they arrive to the hospital, every day," says volunteer coordinator Mr. Pidot. "The children are naturally hesitant when they arrive -- as are their families. A simple toy can make all the difference in the world to a young child. An imaginary friend who can be an outlet for the child's need to express their fear and to see a more hopeful and comforting world."
We are committed to continuing healing support programs in House of Hope and other cancer and rare diseases treatment centers. Thank you again for your kindness. We look forward to your contunued support.
