Every drop counts ... when getting water for your family means walking 10km every day across rough terrain and carrying it home, when girls drop out of school because there are no facilities to manage their period with dignity, when children under five are dying from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. Every donation counts when Kenyan households and schools can get clean water, safe latrines and hygiene education to improve health, prevent disease and save lives.
Clean water and sanitation are basic human rights, yet over half of households in Kericho County don't have access. Families rely on polluted rivers and ponds, exposing themselves to diseases such as cholera, dysentery & typhoid. Climate change is worsening with extremes of flood and drought, making water even harder to access. Women and girls bear the greatest burden as they walk long distances each day to collect water, making it harder for communities to escape poverty and build better lives.
This project will support, community owned, natural spring protection construction, gravity-fed water schemes, school rain water harvesting systems, improved latrines and sanitation. It will bring clean water closer to people's door steps and bring washrooms, latrines and hygiene education to schools. Resilience to climate change will increase. Girls will stay in school, women will grow stronger, communities will thrive, prosper and build the lives they want.
Protecting natural water sources prevents animal contamination and provides safer collection points. Planting trees at each site helps prevent soil erosion and improves water retention. Communities will have better health, improved school attendance, be more resilient to the impact of climate change and livelihoods will be strengthened. The project practices cost-sharing and all plans are made in collaboration with community members and local partners ensuring long term sustainability.
