The first resources obtained from this project have been used by Red COMAL to support an indigenous youth organization - Planta Verde, located in the community of El Pelón, in the municipality of Marcala, department of La Paz. It has been invested in the infrastructure of a small biofactory for the production of agroecological inputs, these bioinputs are used for the development of coffee, basic grains and vegetable crops, both for self-consumption of families and for income generation through commercialization in local markets.
Main achievements:
During this period, support and accompaniment was provided to 18 families of small agroecological producers. We contributed to the expansion of the biofactory by providing 20 sheets of zinc roofing, a roll of cyclone mesh, 20 bags of cement and 13 pounds of nails. We also provided equipment (scales, sack sewing machine, baskets) for the operation of the biofactory.
Indirectly, with the establishment of the biofactory, some 80 families have benefited because they can purchase bioinputs close to their farms at a low cost. During this period, 200 quintals of bocashi and some liquid bioinputs were produced. Of these, 70 quintals of bocashi fertilizer, 10 gallons of m5, 10 gallons of mineral broth and 10 gallons of camizin were marketed.
The use of locally produced bioinputs has increased productivity, especially in vegetable crops, and has reduced production costs, especially now that the cost of chemical fertilizers is high in the market. In addition, producers' dependence on agrochemical packages for crop management has been reduced. Some families are already selling their products in formal markets. In addition, it has contributed to the generation of sources of employment and income for young people in the community, as well as ensuring the sustainability of the processes.
On behalf of the families accompanied by Red COMAL, we thank the donors and GlobalGiving for their valuable support, which makes possible our work for the dignity and quality of life of peasant and indigenous families in Honduras.
