Project Title: Climate Resilient Families in Honduras

The Honduran population is currently facing a profound food and climate crisis. The impact of climate change is evident in farmers and indigenous communities, expressed in recurrent droughts or excessive rains that cause crop failures. Another aspect that affects the families of producers is the high cost of inputs for crop management and of course the lack of implementation of public policies to encourage small-scale agriculture. This results in migration, especially of women and young people who leave the countryside for the city and abroad, thus reducing the labor force for food production in rural areas.

 Main achievements:

During the fourth quarter, technical accompaniment continued for farming families, especially for corn, bean, vegetable and fruit crops.

Twelve families headed by women have received support with seeds for the production of beet and lettuce seedlings. Women have been assisted in establishing seedling marketing relationships with local producer organizations.

Some producers have received technical assistance for the proper management of lemon and avocado crops, and the first fruits are showing.

At least 6 farming families in the dry corridor in southern Honduras have been supported with plastic tanks for rainwater storage; these families suffer from water shortages. With these water storage systems they can conserve rainwater for domestic use and for irrigation of backyard crops.

On behalf of the community organizations, the Board of Directors and staff of Red COMAL, we would like to thank all the donors who, through GlobalGiving, make this work for the rights of the farmers of Honduras possible.
