This project will combat illiteracy in Guatemala by fostering a love of reading and books in children at an early age. More specifically, this project will form 8 Early Literacy Book Circles. As part of these book circles Guatemalan teachers (of preschool through grade 2) will receive 8 age appropriate children's books in Spanish per month throughout the school year. The teachers will read the books to their students and then return them to receive a new batch of children's books.
Many Guatemalan children are at a danger of never learning to read. In fact, 1 out of every 3 Guatemalan adults cannot read. Early literacy lays the foundation for future literacy. Essential to early literacy is access to books. A significant portion of the Guatemalan population lives in poverty making it difficult for families, and even schools, to afford books. This project will provide 80+ preschool to Grade 2 students with access to 64 age appropriate children's books in Spanish each year.
Early Literacy Book Circles will support Guatemalan preschool through Grade 2 students' early literacy by increasing their teachers' access to books to read to them in the classroom.
