Children in Families (CIF), a local Cambodian NGO, is a national leader in disability-inclusive family-based care. Through this project, CIF will build capacity in multiple local communities where access to specialized disability support services is limited or absent. CIF staff will coordinate and facilitate training to community stakeholders to equip them to identify, support, and protect children who have disabilities. This project will also help to develop and strengthen referral networks.
There are significant challenges in the provision of services to individuals with disabilities in Cambodia, including limited human resources in clinical and rehabilitative care, poor access to services, limited effective referral mechanisms, limited awareness of available services among local authorities and persons with disabilities, and limited coordination of services. Most people with disabilities live in rural areas, where services are severely lacking.
Based on our experience employing community-based rehabilitation to support children with disabilities, Children In Families has developed a curriculum to equip community members in identifying, supporting, and protecting children who have disabilities. We will coordinate with government and civil service networks to provide this training more broadly in rural communities, empowering community members to provide basic supports to children and assist them in accessing specialized services.
The project will train and equip 68 members of six rural communities in two provinces, including local government officials. At present, this project will significantly impact the well-being of 240 children with disabilities and their families with improved safety, inclusion, and quality of life. Targeting government officials, health center staff, and educators in the community, will ensure the long-term capacity to identify, support, and protect children with disabilities and their families.
