Project Report | Jun 17, 2025
June 2005 Report

By Angi Yoder-Maina | Executive Director

This progress report from the Green String Network details the success of their Kumekucha Quest program, which provides mental health and wellbeing support to Kenyan youth aged 10-24.

Key Achievements:

  • Reached over 2,400 individuals across 28 campaigns in two counties during an 18-month transition period
  • Achieved impressive outcomes: 68% improvement in overall wellbeing, 58% decrease in post-traumatic stress, and 100% increase in trauma/mental health awareness
  • Successfully completed 12-week "Circles" programs with new partners in Nairobi

Program Impact: The report highlights powerful individual transformations, including participants overcoming suicidal thoughts, alcohol addiction, and mental health struggles. The program uses wellbeing practices like breathwork, meditation, and body tapping in safe spaces where youth can share experiences and develop emotional regulation skills.

Context and Need: The program addresses critical challenges facing Kenyan youth, who represent over 60% of the population and experience chronic stress and trauma from poverty, unemployment, violence, and stigma around mental health discussions.

Next Steps: The Green String Network continues scaling the program with support from Grand Challenges Canada, aiming to engage 1,000 young Kenyans in wellbeing support while building community networks of parents, teachers, and community members around program graduates.
