Bridging Academia and Impact: Montclair State University Visits HAF

By Fatima Zahra Laaribi | Program Manager

What truly sets the High Atlas Foundation (HAF) apart is the heartbeat of its work, the diversity of programs born directly from the voices, dreams, needs and potentials of the communities it serves. Every initiative reflects a story of collaboration, hope, and the belief that lasting change begins at the grassroots.

Visitors and partners are often moved by this diversity; a living testament to the power of people shaping their own future. Among HAF’s many partnerships, its collaboration with universities stands out as a bridge between learning and impact, giving students the chance to experience development work firsthand. Over the years, HAF has welcomed representatives from more than 55 international universities and built strong ties with five national universities in Morocco.

On October 21st, we had the joy and honor of welcoming MBA students from Montclair State University (USA). Their visit was a celebration of curiosity and purpose, exploring how community-led sustainable development and social entrepreneurship create real and lasting change in Morocco.

The journey began at HAF’s office in Marrakech where Dr. Yossef Ben-Meir, HAF President, shared the Foundation’s projects, ones rooted in participation, empowerment, and shared vision.

The students then traveled to the highly productive Akrich community tree nursery, also a symbol of Morocco’s living heritage. There, they met Abderrahim Beddah, the devoted caretaker who tends the trees with quiet strength and love, nurturing both life and legacy.

Their next stop was the Achbarou Women’s Cooperative, where the air was filled with warmth, laughter, and the rhythmic beauty of weaving. The women proudly showcased their carpet-making craft and spoke about how economic empowerment has opened doors to dignity, confidence, and new opportunities for their families.

This exchange was more than a visit,  it was a meeting of hearts and minds, a shared belief that learning and compassion can move mountains. Experiences like this remind us that sustainability and empowerment grow strongest when rooted in understanding, respect, and connection.

We warmly invite more students and universities to join this journey to walk alongside Moroccan communities, learn from their wisdom, and be part of building a more sustainable world.
