Nearing Phase 1 of Construction
By COCE Outreach Team | Project Team Member
At COCE Kenya, we continue to inch closer to Phase 1 of our library’s construction. We are excited to report we have officially sent the project out for bid, and look forward to selecting a contractor to execute construction. We anticipate the selection phase to close by the end of October 2022 to begin the initial phases of library construction before welcoming in the new year.
Once we complete construction, COCE will be closer to actualizing its vision of ensuring that all children in rural Kenya have the knowledge and tools they need to lead healthy and successful lives.
October 8th-14th, we will be hosting COCE’s 2nd Annual Growing Literacy Virtual Race. The majority of the event’s proceeds will go towards the library construction fund. To continue supporting our library project by participating in this event, please go to www.bit.ly/3TIV9TY to register.

Building Momentum

These past few months have been busy for the Collective for Orphan Care and Education (COCE). In April, the library plans were approved by Busia county officials. In May, we received the Environmental Impact Assessment report, which determined that the project will not have significant negative effects on the environment. This means that we are now able to move forward with the project!
Currently, we are working with our Architect to identify potential contractors and review bids. Once selected, we will begin buying materials for Phase I of construction -- the foundation. While we anticipate that the project is going to be more costly than originally planned, given the high cost of construction materials at this time, we plan to begin construction this fall.
At COCE, we are so thankful for your support; we could not do this work without you. We hope you will continue on this journey with us, as we move toward making the dream of this community library a reality.

Proposed Library Floor Plan
It's hard to believe it is already February!
The COCE team has been busy, and the planning and approval process for our community library is underway. We have contracted with Locus Studio Ltd as the architect and lead consultant for our building project. Currently, work is being done to ensure that the site conditions and design are in compliance with local building requirements. Then we can move forward with locating a contractor and getting the construction going.
When we look at this proposed floor plan, we are amazed at the potential this library has to create learning and recreation space for community members of all ages. We hope you will share in our excitement, as none of this would be possible without you. Because of you, we raised $4,784.14 in one-time donations and $2,515.00 from recurring donations here on GlobalGiving. We hope you will continue to support us this year as we work to finish raising the money needed to complete this library!
In addition to planning library construction, we are excited to be building our partnership with
Young Scientists Academy, based in Wilmington, NC. We are working together to increase science literacy in Busia County, Kenya, to empower youth there to be community ambassadors and innovators. Be on the lookout for our updates on
