The birth of a child is a joyous occasion for every family; but, when Sumi was born it was a sad affair for the family. His parents were shocked to see their child’s distorted face. His upper lip was split into two. They were scared of societal rejection and ridicule and did not want to take the child home. His mother’s heart however only knew love for her child; she could not be parted from her child.
At home their superstitious family members commented that someone must have cast a voodoo spell on the child. His parents cried and cursed their fate as they struggled to even feed their baby. They looked for shelter homes where they could put their child and even planned on leaving their community when his mother refused to give up her child.
When they went back to the hospital seeking help, the administration realised the parents’ dilemma and counseled them and informed them about Mission Smile. They were assured that cleft is not a curse. They learnt that it could be corrected and were relieved slightly. Upon returning home his mother wasted no time in contacting Mission Smile.
At our 100th Mission, 7-months-old Sumi was one of the 100 children found fit for our corrective surgery.
When his parents saw Sumi post-operation they could not believe their eyes. His split lip was gone. He had a whole new smile! His mother said that she knew in her heart that her child could become normal. Even though the first night after surgery was painful for the little one, he was on his way to recovery by the time he was discharged the next day. They went back home smiling.
With your help we made Sumi’s mother’s dreams come true and we couldn’t thank you enough. We believe you will continue to support us in our mission to in helping realise the hopes of many mothers who dream of a better future for their child.
