The importance of information: Vira's story

Dear friend of TSF,

The war in Ukraine forced millions of civilians – mostly women, children and elderly people – to flee their home. Many internally displaced persons live in collective centers across the country, creating a need for humanitarian assistance, especially for reliable communication to support livelihood, education and well-being. Thanks to your continuous support, Télécoms Sans Frontières has connected thousands of internally displaced people across Ukraine, working with shelters and local organizations.

We currently support 22 centers, which allows us to connect more than 1,500 displaced people every month. Among them is Vira, an elderly woman living in a shelter. “We came here three years ago, there was no Internet here”, she told us. “And then we were connected.” TSF identifies shelters that do not have access to the Internet from a list of active collective sites, and selects the most populated ones to ensure our action benefits as many people as possible. “Free access is important to me,” Vira said. “I get up in the morning, and immediately watch the news because my son is fighting, I watch the situation. We really want the war to end.

Access to information, including news about the country’s situation, is essential for people living in shelters, like Vira. Connectivity also enables them to use online group chats for information, coordination, and updates on aid.
