In 2020, AIL staff adapted programs to cater to the changing needs of the people we serve. Lockdown meant workers, especially day laborers, became immediately in need of assistance. They had nowhere to turn for food aid, personal protective equipment or virus information.
AIL provided food aid, cooked meals, PPE production and virus information on Radio Meraj. We were able to donate sanitation supplies to the government and to continue to provide health care at clinics and health education about the virus as well as setting up a 50 bed Covid hospital. Our education programs were adapted to distance learning.
Staff have been able to sustain this effort through many months, a longer time than many expected. In the latter part of the year, schools and Learning Centers were able to reopen with strict sanitation and social distancing protocols in place. This is far from ideal but returning our youth to some form of normality was vital to stave off another crisis of lost education, rise in child marriage and increase in domestic violence. The effort to deal with the pandemic continues in 2021 as does AIL’s work to care for the most vulnerable in our society.
