During these past few months, our team focused on strengthening collaboration with local communities and deepening our understanding of the social and ecological context of La Poza Grande and surrounding areas of Bahia Magdalena.
We conducted interviews with community members to learn about their perspectives on mangrove conservation and explore opportunities to collaborate in ways that also support community well-being. These conversations are helping to create a map of local actors, which will guide future partnerships and joint conservation actions.
The team also met with the Esteros de Santo Domingo fishing cooperative to learn more about their fishing practices and identify ways to align sustainable resource use with mangrove protection.
In La Poza, we documented the main species present in the area and took photographs to record their current condition. We also developed a draft design for education and informative signs to be placed in key areas. These efforts help strengthing the visibility of conservation actions and foster community awareness of the importance of protecting mangroves.
Understanding the local context, maintaining good relationships with the community, and involving people in the process are essential steps to ensure that future education and restoration initiatives can continue taking place in these areas.
