Elevating deaf women and girls into Professional Hairdressers

By Blessing Chaipa | Director

The lack of inclusive employment opportunities for deaf individuals disproportionately affects women and girls, leaving them vulnerable to issues such as gender-based violence (GBV). Nzeve continues to support persons with disabilities in accessing both formal and informal employment, enabling them to become independent, active citizens who contribute to inclusive development and community transformation.

Recently, Nzeve, in partnership with Crown Training Centre, conducted a one-month professional hairdressing course for five deaf girls, all of whom received certificates. The training aimed to enhance their employment prospects and promote financial independence by equipping them to establish their own salons or become professional hairdressing trainers. It included both theoretical and practical components covering braiding styles, wig making, professional conduct, record-keeping, and budgeting.

Participants also attended a grooming and etiquette session focused on self-presentation, behaviour, and attitude—key elements for building professionalism and attracting clients. This holistic training strengthened the women’s confidence and prepared them for success in the hairdressing industry.

One participant noted, “I am grateful for this new skill that will open greater opportunities for me, as I dream of building my own salon and earning my own income.”

Nzeve’s initiative not only promotes inclusive employment but also helps cultivate role models within the deaf community, inspiring other deaf individuals and families to recognize their potential.
