At WINGS are very proud to share that we have officially fully transitioned to the use of thermocoagulation to treat precancerous cervical lesions. A 2022 donation from the foundation Hands of Healing enabled us to purchase 10 thermocoagulation units, one for each mobile unit and clinic space. Thermocoagulation treatment is a huge step forward, allowing us to continue applying the “Screen and Treat” methodology - an international best practice which requires that screening results are available in real time and treatment offered immediately. Thermocoagulation units are lightweight, meaning that our nursing staff can carry one to each jornada (clinic day); chargeable, enabling us to treat 100 patients with a single charge; and offer a faster and more pleasant patient experience. Now, when a patient presents with precancerous lesions, our team can offer lifesaving treatment to every patient in the moment - 100% of the time.
Our entire clinical staff went through training this fall, learning the advantages of the units and how to use them. According to our Medical Director, Dr. Michelle Dubón, the team was very excited and proud to be able to offer updated, high-quality care. “They feel like revolutionaries,” she noted.
We thank Hands of Healing and each of you for supporting our efforts to eliminate preventable deaths due to cervical cancer in Guatemala.
