A Chance Encounter, a Lifesaving Treatment

By Leslie Callejas | Assistant Director of Development

On April 2nd, a woman arrived at her local school just to drop off her child. She didn’t expect to stay—but she noticed WINGS holding a jornada outside and stopped to listen. Moved by what she heard, she asked for a VIA  (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) screening, a simple procedure used to detect early signs of cervical cancer. The result was positive.

Three years earlier, she’d been told she had a lesion at another clinic but was only handed a result and told to go to a hospital she couldn’t afford to visit. With no time or money, she never went—hoping the problem would resolve on its own.

At WINGS, we know many women live busy lives and put their health last—especially when care comes at a cost. That’s why we meet them where they are. When we told her she could get thermal ablation the same day, for free, she waited patiently for the mobile unit to bring the equipment. She left that day treated—and thankful.

Stories like hers remind us why we take healthcare beyond hospital walls: to ensure that no woman has to choose between her health and her everyday life.
