Dear Supporters,
Today I would like to tell you about how we have been using your generous donations over the last few months to support the Ikhayalethemba Sanctuary.
Garden
In our last report, we told you about the Maple Grove group that visited us. One of the projects that they started was the vegetable garden. The vegetable garden will be used to grow food for the children living at the Sanctuary and any surplus will be sold to the local community.
We have used your donations to put some finishing touches on the project. We have bought nets to protect the garden from all unwanted pests, rainwater tanks for water storage and an irrigation system that will be connected to the tanks. This will reduce water bills, provide an alternative water supply and help us maintain a healthy garden through the ongoing drought.
Salary Support
In recent years, Ikhayalethemba has not been receiving as much regular support from local donors. Mama does what she can to provide for the sanctuary and we support her in setting up and maintaining various income generating projects. Mama runs a second-hand shop, rents out unused buildings and will soon be able to sell produce from the garden. But some months are tougher than others. We have managed to provide financial assistance to her for 3 months. She will use this money to pay the salaries of the carers and house mothers that work, day and night, to provide care and support to the children who live there.
This will help relieve the pressure facing Mama as she continues to build her own income generating initiatives at the Sanctuary.
Bathroom Improvements
Lastly, we have just got quotes to get the bathroom in House 6, where the special needs children live, upgraded and fixed. We are so pleased about this and can't wait to see what a difference this will make to the children, as well as to for the carers who look after them.
Thank you for your generous support that makes it possible for us to continue supporting and upgrading the Ikhayalethemba Sanctuary.
With Gratitude,
GVI Cape Town
