I was delighted to recently have the opportunity to talk with Alemayehu Sisay (Country Director at Orbis Ethiopia) about how the team in Ethiopia have been forced to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic in Ethiopia.
In previous years Orbis would organise community mass gatherings in order to distribute the required antibiotic to eliminate blinding eye diseases, like trachoma. In line with government restrictions, mass gatherings are not currently allowed in Ethiopia. Therefore, Orbis was forced to transform their work and go house-to-house to ensure the antibiotics were received by the almost 3.5 million population. If even one round of the annual antibiotic is missed, this would set the project back years and have a huge impact on the prevalence of trachoma in the region.
It was vital for the team to work with the Ministry of Health to ensure the work of Orbis could continue, while also adhering to government Covid-19 guidelines.
