Alongside our dedicated partners, we have successfully delivered 100 million doses of the sight-saving antibiotic, azithromycin, across Ethiopia.
At a celebration held in the Gacho Baba District in the Southern region of Ethiopia, six-year-old Hizkiel received the official 100 millionth dose administered by Ethiopian health minister, Lelisa Amanuel. To commemorate this significant occasion, local children performed a play, and community leaders blessed the giving of this historic dose. Dr. Alemayehu Sisay, the Country Director of Orbis Ethiopia, expressed the significance of this achievement by saying, “Today is a historic moment. We started by administering one dose of azithromycin in 2003. It has been a long journey to reach this 100 millionth dose 20 years later. So, while the work continues, today has a special meaning to all involved in working to eliminate trachoma in Ethiopia.” The administration of the 100 millionth dose was part of a broader Orbis-led mass drug administration campaign taking place in the Gacho Baba District. In 2022, we, along with our partners, distributed 3.4 million antibiotic doses for trachoma control and elimination in Ethiopia. This work will persist in the years to come, with the aim of eliminating trachoma in the country by 2030.
Trachoma, one of the world’s oldest infectious diseases known to humans, is highly contagious but easily treatable and preventable. If left untreated, trachoma can cause extreme pain and permanent blindness. By delivering 100 million doses of the sight-saving medication and implementing the World Health Organisation’s SAFE strategy, we have made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of trachoma across the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s region of Ethiopia. With strong partnerships and your continued generosity, we are confident that we will soon make trachoma history in Ethiopia.
