Building a brighter future

By Ciara Baumgartner | Development Manager

Abraham and Sebele's Family
Abraham and Sebele's Family

Abraham and Seble have built a simple yet loving life together in their rural village. Married for six years, they are the proud parents of three young children: Wondimu, aged 5, Zenash, 4, and little Rabiet, just 2. Abraham works hard as a farmer, while Seble cares for the home and children. The crops Abraham grows—mostly staple foods—are just enough to feed the family, but not enough to sell for extra income. Twice a year, the entire family helps with the harvest to ensure they have enough food to last. Though life is challenging, Abraham and Seble are determined to provide for their children and build a hopeful future together.

Recently, all five members of the family were diagnosed with active trachoma, an eye infection that can lead to blindness if left untreated. With no money to seek medical care, Abraham and Seble feared for their children's health and future.

Active trachoma can have a profound impact on children, limiting their ability to play and enjoy life. The infection causes pain and discomfort, making it difficult for them to be outside in bright sunlight, which can further irritate their eyes. As a result, children often withdraw from their friends and activities, missing out on vital social interactions and the joy of childhood.

Thankfully, through the support of Orbis and because of supporters like you, the family received the antibiotics they desperately needed, free of charge. It’s a simple treatment, yet often out of reach for families like theirs, as healthcare facilities are far away, and the cost of treatment often beyond their means. As Sble said: “I am incredibly happy to have antibiotics to treat the infections, and all the more so, because they have been delivered at our home. It is not easy to travel to a clinic and it costs, so it is fantastic to have this support today”.

Now, the family is on the path to recovery. Their sight, so crucial for farming, learning, and daily life, is being saved. With the help of Orbis, Abraham, Seble, and their children can continue building their future, free from the threat of blindness.
