The DRC faces rapid population growth, poverty, and gender disparities in education. Families often prioritize boys' education, and many rural children drop out due to lack of support or being forced into labor. Despite free primary education, few complete school, especially girls. Women face limited resources, violence, and economic vulnerability, perpetuating poverty. To combat this, OGDH-RDC ASBL aims to support South Kivu's population, focusing on empowering out-of-school girls and women.
In the DRC, out-of-school young women and girls face poverty, marginalization, and limited access to education and resources. Many lack vocational skills, leaving them financially dependent and vulnerable to exploitation and violence. Rural communities undervalue women's contributions to development, perpetuating gender disparities and economic stagnation. This project strengthens the capacity of 60 women per year to break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial independence.
This project establishes a vocational training center equipped to teach trades like tailoring, soap making, food processing, and masonry. It integrates leadership, gender, and business management training to empower women economically and socially. By organizing participants into cooperatives and engaging them in community awareness campaigns, the project fosters behavioral change, enhances local economies, and positions women as drivers of development in their communities.
The long-term impact of this project will include enhanced economic independence for women through vocational skills, contributing to local economic growth. It will promote gender equality by challenging societal norms and empowering women as leaders. Additionally, it will foster intergenerational change, improving children's education and well-being. The cooperative model will ensure sustainable livelihoods and encourage entrepreneurship, helping break the cycle of poverty, creating resiliency.
