In the city of Bukavu, School libraries do not acquire any books and do not encourage reading. Children and families do not benefit from any leisure activities related to books. A discussion was then initiated on the creation of a school library, which could welcome students, facilitate access to books from a very young age. The establishment of such a tool, both sustainable and available, makes it possible to strengthen access to reading for all students, by involving schools.
The city of Bukavu, with a population of 1.5 million, does not have a public library, which makes it very difficult for residents of the outlying districts of Bukavu to have direct access to books. Young people are particularly disadvantaged: school libraries do not acquire any books and do not encourage reading. Similarly, children and families do not benefit from any leisure activities related to books, whether cultural or artistic, whether in the school or in the private sector.
About 10 peripheral schools will have access to the library for free. They will be followed by a team that will supervise them every day during mediation activities around the book. Children will find a smile, a source of knowledge and help. Schools and families will find an effective way to strengthen the education of their students.
To sustain this project, schools will have to collaborate with parents to strengthen the renewal of the documentary fund and maintain the structure. Our team will continue to support and accompany teachers to promote the school library.
