IsraAID South Sudan: Responding to the 2024 Cholera Outbreak

By IsraAID South Sudan | IsraAID Staff

IsraAID South Sudan has been at the forefront of responding to the devastating cholera outbreak that erupted in October 2024. We are delivering lifesaving interventions and empowering communities to navigate this crisis within a crisisThe outbreak spread rapidly within Renk and Malakal in Upper Nile State and Juba in Central Equatoria, where IsraAID’s long-term reliefteam is based. These regions are home to high concentrations of South Sudan’s most vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), children under five, and the elderly, many of whom lack access to basic health services and sanitation. Fueled by flooding, overcrowding, and limited access to clean water, the outbreak resulted in over 2,500 reported cases and 32 deaths by the end of 2024.

IsraAID South Sudan, in collaboration with the national Cholera Taskforce, launched a comprehensive response. To strengthen local healthcare capacities, our team trained 19 outreach workers to operate Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs) in Juba's Person of Concern Camps I and III.These ORPs provided critical treatment for more than 230 patients with mild to moderate cholera symptoms.

To supplement these efforts, IsraAID is raising awareness of the dangers of cholera and how to prevent its spread. We reached over 4,500 people with hygiene messaging, teaching essential practices like handwashing and safe water storage. Teams also conducted oral cholera vaccination campaigns by going door-to-door in high-risk communities, and meeting with community leaders to discuss symptoms and prevention.Psychological first aid was administered to over 1,100 affected individuals to enhance recovery and encourage the resumption of daily family activities.

By addressing gaps in clean water access and providing education and psychosocial support, IsraAID is ensuring that communities are better prepared for future challenges while fostering recovery and hope in the face of crisis.
