Temples and religious institutions hold significant potential to serve as centers for ecological awareness and action. Monastics, as respected spiritual leaders, play an influential role. Their position enables them to inspire reflection, ethical engagement, and collective responses toward greater social and ecological justice. The Eco-Dharma Camp is designed to support monastics, introducing practical ecological concepts for sustainability initiatives rooted in Buddhist teachings and practice.
Communities across Thailand are increasingly affected by floods, heatwaves, pollution, and plastic waste. While these crises affect both urban and rural populations, many communities lack local leadership to respond effectively. Buddhist temples are central to community life, and monks and nuns are respected moral guides. Yet many monastics have limited opportunities to learn about sustainability or how temples can lead ecological action.
The Eco-Dharma Camp will bring 20 monks and nuns from across Thailand to a five-day training at Thippayasathan Dhamma Bhikkhuni Arama. Through workshops, dialogue, and hands-on learning with environmental practitioners and engaged monastics, participants will explore how Buddhist teachings can inspire ecological responsibility and how temples can become centers for sustainability and community action.
By empowering monks and nuns to integrate ecological awareness into spiritual practice and community leadership, the Eco-Dharma Camp will help strengthen a growing network of environmentally engaged temples across Thailand. Participants can bring what they learn back to their communities, inspiring initiatives such as sustainable farming, waste reduction, and ecological education. Over time, this can contribute to a wider cultural shift toward environmental stewardship rooted in Buddhist values.
