"Working on the territory with municipalities.”
As Institute of Nature and Society of Oaxaca we recognize that a fundamental part of achieving our goal of regenerating the hydro-social fabric is working with communities and municipalities, as they are the ones who safeguard the territory and the natural heritag within it.
That is why, through outreach to municipalities, we have supported the process of reconciliation between people and their environment. This outreach is based on diverse actions and strategies that have different levels of engagement and support (training, construction, consulting), but are all guided by four main principles: territorial regeneration, alternative technologies, integrated water management and sustainable production. For example, we support municipalities like Villa de Zaachila by training students and staff from educational centers on the importance of rainwater harvesting, storage, and use, as well as the installation of rainwater harvesting and storage systems. In San Andrés Ixtlahuaca we advised on the construction of gabions, dry toilets, a greenhouse, rainwater harvesting ponds and infiltration trenches. In Teotitlán del Valle we supported the reforestation of 1.5 hectares and, with the community's help, designed an ecological park. In San Gabriel and San Miguel Guelache, we advised on the construction of three fish ponds and dry toilets. In San Andrés Huayapan we proposed a comprehensive project for the recovery and regeneration of the basins surrounding the community.
Over 34 years we have been working in the region, we have supported a considerable number of communities and municipalities, proudly witnessing how our collective efforts have yielded results that have contributed to the respectful and conscious use of nature, restoring awareness and appreciation for the environment and all its elements. We hope to continue supporting the processes of reconciliation between the municipalities and their habitat.
