In remote and rural communities in Nigeria, access to education for many children is limited by circumstance rather than potential. Poverty, scarce learning resources, and lack of awareness of children’s rights continue to threaten school attendance, learning outcomes, and long-term opportunities.
In Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the right to learn, dream, and thrive, and none should be left behind, irrespective of their status or location!
In commemoration of World Children’s Day, KIR Foundation implemented the Back2School Project at Christ Disciple Mission Primary Schools in Mubi Hills, Adamawa State, ensuring that each of the 403 children and their teachers in the underserved communities of Lila, Lainde, Thuba and Gilmari have the learning materials to acquire knowledge and the encouragement to grow.
Jessy is an 11-year-old Primary 3 pupil and the firstborn in her family. She is also the first to attend school. Her parents are hard-working peasants who cannot afford books and essential learning materials for her to attend and stay in school. Thus, without support, children like Jessy and 402 of her school mates, risk falling behind or dropping out. However, with the right intervention, their stories and futures can change.
KIR Foundation celebrated World Children’s Day with the theme “My Day, My Rights,” by providing books and essential writing materials (Exercise books, Pens, Pencils, Rulers, Erasers, and Sharpeners) to 403 pupils. While the teachers were also supported with class registers and writing materials to enhance classroom management and overall learning outcomes.
The day began with an interactive session led by Comfort (the Coordinator of the CDM Primary Schools), who spoke to the children about their rights, emphasizing safety, education, health, being heard, play, and protection from harm. She encouraged the pupils to recognize their value and importance. Thereafter, Comfort facilitated a practical reading session using Easy Learning: Size and Measurement Book 1 by Harper Collins to help the pupils improve reading skills, comprehension, and confidence. This was the first time that many of them had received complete learning materials. The immediate impact was visible, the children were more engaged, teachers better equipped, and awareness of children’s rights strengthened across the school community.
Thanks to our GlobalGiving donors, the Back2School Project equipped 403 pupils, including Jessy, with essential tools for daily learning. It has encouraged children to remain in school, strengthened awareness of children’s rights, and improved the overall learning environment within the school community.
Comfort expressed her heartfelt gratitude, stating:
“We sincerely thank, Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation and the GlobalGiving donors for the support you have given us. We are truly grateful. This intervention will enhance education in this locality, help the children grow and develop academically, and enable them to better understand their place in society. Thank you very much for your continued support.”
Access to books and learning materials is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human right for all children including an underserved boy like Jessy, and her peers. When children have the right tools, they effectively and efficiently acquire knowledge, build confidence, and create opportunities for a better future. Education protects childhood, strengthens communities, and lays the foundation for long-term social and economic progress.
We especially thank our recurring donors, whose relentless support has helped us send 403 children including Jessy and her peers back to school with essential learning materials. Our goal is to complete this project in 2026. However, we still need $2,288 to ensure that girls like her, Jessy, continue to go to school.
CDM Primary School Lainde still needs flooring and windows, CDM Primary School Gilmari needs desks and bookshelves, and all the schools need educational materials (writing materials, textbooks, and storybooks) and about 100 desks. Kindly consider becoming a recurring donor and donate to our project: http://bit.ly/2TLI6Bm
Please encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to invest in more girls like Jessy and their peers to make learning easier for them!
