THESE KIDS WERE LABELED "UNABLE TO LEARN" BECAUSE OF DISABILITIES. Don't underestimate the power of dedicated teachers! Or the joy kids feel in learning ! 1/3 of Romanian disabled children do not attend school. Orphaned children have no champion to help them get opportunities to learn. Our Delia's Center for Special Needs Kids provides education, speech therapy, nutritional support, and life skills to children with intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities.
In rural Vaslui County, where Delia's Center for Special Needs Kids is located, there are no special education teachers. Children are denied an education according to their needs and are marginalized for their disabilities. Children growing up in foster care without gaining life skills/education risk become adults who can't care for themselves and are at risk of being institutionalized or living on the streets.
Each of the 49 children attending Delia's Center for Special Needs Kids benefits from individualized teaching and a safe environment where they feel valued. Through education, therapies and socialization, we will prevent children from growing up and being placed in an institution because they have no life skills/education. We also provide nutrition support to improve wellness and academic success.
Wherever possible, our goal is to integrate children into mainstream schooling. Since opening over 6 years ago, 75% of our children are now in some type of formal schooling. We provide the educational services and support that keep them there and prevent school drop out. Our kids have intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities including autisml. Many also have emotional trauma from neglect and abuse. Long-term impact includes overall health and well-being.
