CWEF High School Scholarships educate and equip students from low-income families in rural China. We work with local partners to identify students who are well-qualified (good character and grades) and vulnerable (low-income, female, minority, etc). Beyond financial support, CWEF's local partners in Yunnan invest in these talented young people and equip them for life after school through enrichment activities that build resilience, leadership skills, and readiness for university or career.
In China, public education beyond Grade 9 is not guaranteed. Students must pass entrance exams to access high school, and families must pay tuition and fees. Across rural China, many well-qualified students from low-income communities and difficult family circumstances struggle to afford these school fees. This leads to significant pressure and stress for students and their families, sometimes leading to severe mental health challenges or students dropping out of school entirely.
CWEF's need-based scholarships make it possible for young women from difficult family circumstances to complete high school, positioning them for bright futures in university and beyond. In addition, student development programs prepare students for life after school. Over the years, these enrichment activities have included summer camps, mental health and resilience-building courses, career workshops, and university visits. Our goal is to nurture the holistic growth of the students we serve.
We believe these young women will go on to do great things in the future. In fact, a large group of previous CWEF High School Scholarship program graduates are doing just that in China's Guangdong province with the recent launch of Shining Star, a domestic non-profit organization that is training university students to serve vulnerable 'left-behind' children in rural areas.
