Beth’s Girls—now Beth’s Ladies—continue to carry forward Beth’s Peace Corps vision of service, education, and global awareness. Empowered to create positive change from within, these remarkable young women are not only completing their degrees; they are improving quality of life across Lumwana West and beyond. As more graduates step into professional roles, they are challenging long-held perceptions and demonstrating the transformative power of educating girls and women.

Beth’s Ladies are working diligently to complete their degree programs. Finishing strong often requires far more than tuition alone. Students face expenses for accommodation, books and supplies, internships, field attachments, practicals, research projects, thesis preparation, graduation requirements, and professional licensing—many of them unexpected. Your generosity helps remove these barriers and keeps their dreams within reach.

Meanwhile, the Early Childhood Development Pre-School is thriving, with strong enrollment in 2026. Level 1 includes 44 students (21 girls and 23 boys), and Level 2 includes 42 students (25 girls and 17 boys), bringing total enrollment to 86 young learners.

EBZEF continues to support the school food program, even as drought conditions ease in Northwest Zambia. For many of these children, the daily meal provided at school remains their most reliable source of nutrition. Your support helps ensure that learning can continue without the burden of hunger.

EBZEF’s continued success is made possible through your faithful and generous support. Science Lab Learners with Equipment

Empowering Futures in Lumwana West

EBZEF continues to see inspiring progress in Lumwana West as projects thrive and “Beth’s Girls” carry forward Elizabeth’s legacy of education and empowerment.

EBZEF Representative Sandra Kamulosu reports, “The Secondary School is operating well. We have a new head teacher who just reported in the last week of July. Our learners are working so hard. They are utilizing the electricity; it's really helping them to study more especially at night. It's equally helping the teachers to prepare in advance for the next day. Electricity has really contributed to the good performance of school.”

She adds, “The Science Laboratory is equally operating so well. Learners have access to the equipment and chemicals in the lab. They are able to do their practical at any time they have a practical lesson. They are able to see the procedures physically since they have all the necessary equipment, materials, and chemicals they require.”

The Pre-School lavatory is nearing completion, marking another milestone in community infrastructure. Sandra notes that “the teacher Belindah Kalumba was redirected to Lumwana. Therefore, she is currently teaching at our kindergarten.” Belindah, a Beth’s Girl who trained in Early Childhood Development Studies with EBZEF’s support, is now “giving back” to her community by educating Lumwana’s youngest learners.

Another Beth’s Girl, Karen Kamulosu, is pursuing a groundbreaking career path. She says, “I will graduate with a degree in Computer Science with a major in Networking and Information Security (Cybersecurity). What I like most about my studies is knowing that everything now and in the future is basically about technology. Being in this field is really interesting to protect people's information (as an ethical hacker) as well as configuring networks and creating clusters. Thank you for believing in my future.”

Karen is yet another excellent role model for the girls and women from her family, her community, and her country. Her accomplishments reflect the power of education to transform not just one life, but entire generations.

EBZEF Project Update #18

Visaka - Medicine and Surgery

Donations in response to our Spring newsletter are deeply appreciated, as Beth’s Girls need support for their second term in 2025. In addition to tuition and boarding, they are now facing increased costs for exam and certificate fees, short courses, research, and thesis projects. Many programs also include “practicals,” similar to internships, that come with their own expenses. As graduation nears, added costs for final certifications and ceremonies continue to accrue. Your support helps these young women finish strong and step into their futures with confidence and hope.

Visaka, for example, who is studying for a Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery, has just completed a rotation in radiology, dermatology, anesthesia, ophthalmology and ENT. She reports, “I wanted to let you know that my subspecialties rotation went well and I successfully obtained a merit in the rotations.”

Mutinta’s practicals in Electrical Technology were in Tanzania. In addition to travel expenses, she needed essential tools for the job — including a multimeter, wire strippers, insulated pliers, a voltage tester, cable cutters, hacksaws, electrical tape, and a safety knife. She reports, “The research was a success, and I was the best! Thank you for your kindness.”

Anipher’s research surveillance trips for her degree in Clinical Medicine were “very exciting because where we are going there are high cases of STIs and malaria. We are going to teach people how it can be prevented, health promotion, etc., and find out what is predisposing those provinces to such.” She adds, “We will be even assigned to go in water plants and see how they are treating the water due to high levels of diarrheal cases in children. As for the Southern Province, there is an outbreak of locusts in farms so we will be even going to those affected farms!” Anipher has written an “Introduction to Public Health Assignment.” She says, “I am going to present and teach others. Imagine, mum!”
