School Year Begins in Honduras

By Mary McCann Sanchez | COMAL collaborator

In Spanish, the word “education” refers to multiple facets in a person’s life. Education includes schooling, academics, training and, importantly, the formation of values and principles. The COMAL network understands education as a key part of every family’s life and celebrates this by dedicating time and resources to wholistic rural education. At the same time, COMAL understands that there are special challenges for families with limited resources and who live in vulnerable conditions.

Main achievements:

The month of February marked the beginning of the academic year in Honduras. It is a time when families set aside time to prepare their children for an enthusiastic return to school. There are tensions, however, whenever a family feels financially stressed by the need to purchase a new book bag, shoes, a uniform or school supplies.

The COMAL network identified several families in need of support. And though each family has its special characteristics, a notable feature of these families is that the mothers are actively engaged in the daily care of their families, work outside the home when time and safety permits, and have contributed to the well-being of other families through their community and organizational service. Following the distribution, I had the privilege of sitting down with one of the smallest children and her mother and was proudly shown a new backpack which the five-year-old had carefully organized with her school supplies. The enthusiasm of both was contagious.

On behalf of the families, we thank the community of donors who, through GlobalGiving, made this new beginning a happy and hopeful one.
