Every life deserves celebration. With the support of GlobalGiving supporters, COMAL is on board to celebrate the much-awaited Children’s Day, alongside 150 rural school children, parents and teachers in the village of El Porvenir, Siguatepeque, Honduras.
The preparations are complete. Traditional dance, the breaking of the piñata, tasty foods and congratulatory words to all gathered will mark the day. No celebration is complete without food and COMAL is bringing cake for all!
How did this celebration come about? In 1954, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), through resolution 836, recommended that each country choose a date to celebrate the human rights of children. These rights include health, education, safety and nutrition, among others. On May 3, 1990, Honduras ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child and officially established the date September 10 for the celebration. In El Porvenir, the gathering in 2025 is scheduled for the following day, September 11.
In Honduras, where children may be displaced from their villages due to poverty or extractive processes -- or tempted to leave their studies to enter the work force at a very young age -- it is important to encourage girls and boys to remain in school. At COMAL we know that it is also important to thank them for the light, laughter and gentle care that they so lovingly bring into our lives.
Thank you, GlobalGiving for joining the celebration!
