Final Report: Educating Rural Families

By Mary McCann Sanchez | COMAL collaborator

Youth create mural of rural life
Youth create mural of rural life

The COMAL network takes an integrated approach to its community work. Some three years ago, COMAL's board, consisting of rural men and women, sought to strengthen rural families, including children, through a small fund for educational projects. This project is now coming to a close, in recognition of new opportunities generated within the network to support indigenous families in their food production and security, strengthen cane producers in transforming their product and fortifying the skills of families confronting the effects of climate change. Each of these opportunities also includes the fundamental principles and practice of popular and technical education.

In looking back over the past three years, COMAL highlights the following achievements:

- COMAL technical trainings reinforced the wisdom of generational practice in respect for the land, water and natural resources and introduced new complementary practices and appropriate technology

- COMAL provided opportunities for rural youth to undertake professional training as interns at COMAL

- COMAL brought youth together with artists from the diaspora and created a beautiful mural of rural life

- COMAL responded to the need of specific rural families who required school supplies

- COMAL supported the educational community in celebrating Children's Day in a nearby school

- COMAL provided a safe environment at its training center ECOSOL for the children of women seeking to expand their knowlege and improve their practices in savings and loans cooperatives

- COMAL brought young professionals in nutrition to its Farmers Market to provide family education on nutrition

The COMAL network is deeply grateful to those who shared in this project through donations and welcomes that same spirit of solidarity via support to other initiatives of the Red COMAL through GlobalGiving.
