Update from Nyota Ing'arayo

Dear Supporters,

Quarter two of the year 2018 for Nyota Ing'arayo school began at the start of April holidays. Beginning of the month of April saw the ending of quarter one and rolling in of quarter two term. During the holidays, we took time to replace the permanent building old roofing with a new one. Working on the roofing was mainly aimed at dealing with the leaking old one. The children are now more comfortable in their classes especially in the rain times, unlike previously when they could squeeze themselves in certain safe but limited areas. This renovation was as well accompanied by a half day coaching of our elder pupils who are in their last days of their primary school education and keenly working hard towards their final examination.

The school resumed back from the April holidays at the start of May. All the learners and the staff reported on the very first day with an exception of a couple of transfer cases.

In June, we began fixing a new ceiling in the permanent building to replace the previous worn out one. This is under the sponsorship of one of our GVI-Mombasa ex-volunteers, Richard. This happens after classes and over the weekends so we can give schooling its time and space.

We have also had the ditches outside the temporary classes filled and cemented under the GVI-CT funding. This has helped drain and drive away the stagnant waters as well as creating easy movement of the children around.

The greenhouse project within the compound is well supplementing the feeding program with mainly vegetables. Within this second quarter, we have had a variety of the vegetables grown inside. This is giving the children a good nutrition and a balanced diet daily.

Within the quarter, we were privileged to receive two of our former volunteers who provided the children with drawing and coloring materials. However, we have not had a lot of outdoor activities due to the on going rains in Mombasa.

All in all, as it is with the nature of life, challenges are always present. We are therefore, once, faced with a demand of new text books for the whole school before the end of this year. This is due to change in our education curriculum which has led to change in the syllabus

However, without the support of The GVI Trust and the other sponsors, we would not have moved this far and we are therefore greatly thankful, Thank you!
