Dear Supporters,
After a long December holidays break, learning resumed on 7th January. The turn up on the first day was excellent where most of all the children, all the teaching and the non-teaching staff reported back as was expected. The school project is doing well and everyone here is happy to be part of it. On opening, we had a few new pupils’ admissions and one new teacher, Mr Michael. Michael is one of our former pupils who got secondary school education through sponsorship of one of our ex-gvi Mombasa volunteers. In his secondary school learning, he managed to win government sponsorship to join university which he will be joining late August this year.
It is also worthy mentioning that our new chicken project is really doing well. With the project, we have been able to provide an egg to each pupil for the first ten classes since January. This is a new project aimed at supplementing the feeding programme. It has supplemented the feeding programme all through the term and it is a continuous process now.
From the sale, due to ageing, of our tuk tuks acquired in 2014, we have managed to purchase a brand new motorbike which we hire out as part of source of income for the school project, and indeed it is a reliable source of income even though it has a little daily return.
Through the frequent visits by our former GVI volunteers, their families and friends, this February our classes three to six were lucky to have excursions each class on it own day. The children really liked it and were happy to learn from the outside environment.
In mid February, our boys football team received sponsorship of football equipment and jerseys from our new partners in Austria. A trip to go and watch one of the premier league football matches was organised by the same sponsors and at the end of the match, the team, Bandari fc, that we all supported emerged the winner.
The school's demand for new textbooks due to change of the education curriculum was met with smiles when one of our former GVI volunteers came in for the rescue and purchased for us enough of all the textbooks we needed in the first six lower classes. We officially began use of the new textbooks at the start of the year. It is a good change in the education system and most of us are ready to go by it.
Due to change of the school uniform last year, so far all our children have at least a pair of it. So beautiful uniform it is, which everyone around admire. This was mainly taken care of by one of the GVI-Mombasa ex volunteers and a few more from other individual donors and partners.
We had two pupils’ examinations in the first quarter which most of the children performed very good and we expect our outgoing class, standard eight, to perform excellently in their final national exams of late October.
The first quarter ended well with our outgoing class winning an excursion sponsored by one of our GVI ex volunteers. It involved a walk down to the beach, jogging along the beach, swimming, some ball games and wound up with a delicious meal sharing at one of the biggest hotels, Reef hotel, in the coastal city of Mombasa.
Moreover, as it is with any project, challenges are inevitable. Mainly with us is the financial challenges, where at times we are forced to leave pending or drop some of our beneficial undertakings of the school project due to lack of funds. This unfortunately leads to a slower move towards our main targets.
Thank you for all your support!
